Which roads need a Hungarian vignette
The e-matrica is required on Hungary's motorways and expressways, the roads carrying an M prefix such as the M1, M3, M5 and M7, and is issued by Nemzeti Útdíjfizetési Szolgáltató Zrt (NÚSZ Zrt, National Toll Payment Services), the state toll operator. Ordinary single- and double-digit national roads do not need a vignette.
Since 1 January 2024 the requirement also covers the southern and eastern sectors of the M0 ring road around Budapest and the Megyeri bridge that carries it over the Danube, previously free, along with parts of the M4, M30, M31, M44 and M76. A few expressways, including the M8, the M80 and the M4 spur to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport, remain toll-free.
Vehicle categories and validity periods
Hungary sorts vehicles into five fee categories: D1 for cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes carrying no more than 7 people; D1M for motorcycles; D2 for vans and other vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes with more than 7 seats, or that otherwise do not fit D1; B2 for buses with more than 9 seats including the driver's; and U for a trailer towed by a D2 or B2 vehicle, bought against the towing vehicle's plate.
For 2026 the national e-matrica comes as a 1-day vignette (introduced in March 2024), a 10-day vignette, a monthly vignette, and an annual vignette running from your chosen start date to 31 January of the following year, whichever month you buy it in. NÚSZ also sells cheaper county and regional annual vignettes covering only the motorway sections inside one county or region. Buying and activating the e-matrica
The Hungarian vignette is fully digital; there is no sticker to display, and the system checks your registration plate electronically, so an incorrectly entered plate, including accented or non-standard characters, is a common reason a vignette shows as invalid. You choose the vehicle's country, plate and validity start date when you buy, and cover can be arranged well ahead of your trip.
A trailer is registered separately under category U but is linked to the towing vehicle's plate, so both vehicles need their own valid vignette for the same dates. Through Vignette ID, activation is normally confirmed within minutes of payment being verified, no account is required, and a Flex add-on lets you change the registered plate afterwards for a fee.
Fines and enforcement
NÚSZ Zrt enforces the e-matrica with automatic number-plate recognition cameras along the toll network; there are no barriers or toll booths, so a missing or invalid vignette is picked up automatically. Drivers who enter a tolled road by mistake have 60 minutes from the moment of entry to buy a valid vignette before a supplementary fee applies.
For 2026 the base supplementary fee for using a tolled road without a valid vignette is 27,790 forints if paid within 60 days of the notice, rising to 95,730 forints after that. Buying the wrong category, for example a car vignette for a vehicle that needed the van category, carries a smaller differential fee of 15,530 forints within 60 days or 49,190 forints after. A first notice can be cancelled by buying a new annual national e-matrica and applying within 75 days, provided the fee is unpaid and from the current year.
Tolls the vignette does not cover
The e-matrica only applies to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes plus buses in category B2. Goods vehicles and vehicle combinations over 3.5 tonnes gross weight pay HU-GO instead, a separate distance-based electronic toll charged per kilometre travelled on the tolled network and calculated by axle count and emission class rather than as a flat-fee vignette.
There are no separate bridge or tunnel tolls for car drivers on top of the vignette; since the 2024 change, the Megyeri bridge over the Danube, previously a free crossing, is included in the standard M0 vignette requirement rather than charged separately.
