Which roads require the Slovenian e-vignette
Slovenia's motorways and expressways are built and tolled by DARS d.d., and every vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes maximum permissible weight needs a valid e-vinjeta registered to its licence plate before entering that network. Regular national and local roads outside the marked motorway and expressway system are not tolled and do not need a vignette.
The e-vinjeta replaced the old paper sticker vignette on 1 December 2021. The system checks number plates rather than a sticker in the windscreen, so there is nothing to display in the vehicle, and buying one for the wrong plate or country of registration means the payment is not recognised on the road.
Vehicle classes and validity periods
Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes are split into two toll classes, and this is where most foreign drivers make a mistake. Class 2A covers vehicles with a height of up to 1.30 metres measured above the front axle: nearly every ordinary car, hatchback, sedan and estate. Class 2B covers vehicles taller than 1.30 metres above the front axle, such as larger vans, pickups, some SUVs, minibuses and campers, even though both classes share the same 3.5 tonne weight limit. Motorcycles and other single-track vehicles form a separate class 1. Because the split is based on measured height rather than the vehicle's registration category, two similar-looking vehicles can fall into different classes; DARS publishes a list of specifically measured models to resolve borderline cases.
Classes 2A and 2B can be bought as a weekly (7-day), monthly (30-day) or annual (365-day) e-vinjeta, with the annual pass running 365 days from whichever start date you choose rather than a fixed calendar year. Motorcycles can buy a weekly, a semi-annual (180-day) or an annual pass. Picking 2A for a vehicle that DARS classes as 2B is a common and costly error, since it does not cover the vehicle.
Buying and activation
The e-vinjeta is bought online and linked electronically to the vehicle's plate and country of registration; there is no sticker to collect. You choose the start date at checkout, and once payment is verified the registration becomes active from that date, so it is worth buying a few days ahead rather than at the border. Vignette ID delivers confirmation by e-mail and in your account, payment is by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, no account sign-up is required, and a Flex add-on lets you change the registered plate after purchase for a fee.
If the plate is wrong, correcting an annual or semi-annual e-vinjeta means buying a fresh one for the right plate and applying for a partial refund of the unused period on the old one; weekly and monthly e-vinjetas are not eligible for this kind of refund.
Fines and enforcement
DARS enforces the e-vinjeta with automatic number-plate cameras along the network, at fixed control points and in mobile toll-supervision vehicles, rather than with roadside stickers or barriers. Using a tolled road without a valid, correctly matched e-vinjeta is an offence under Slovenia's Motorway Toll Act and carries a standard fine of 300 euros issued to the registered keeper; related offences, such as unlawfully moving a valid vignette's registration to a different plate, are penalised separately and can attract a higher fine. There is no grace period, so if you realise you have forgotten one, buy an e-vinjeta immediately and leave the motorway at the next opportunity.
Tolls not covered by the vignette
The Karavanke (Karawanken) road tunnel on the A2 motorway toward the Austrian border is not included in the e-vinjeta and is charged as a separate toll on top of it, in addition to, not instead of, the e-vinjeta needed for the rest of the network.
